Voice Of The Metro: Introduce your band to the world.
Fly Kid: Well, my name is Fly Kid, and I’m the Hype Mic for BWA Band. We stand for “Black With Ambition”. We have been out for like 8-9 months and we are from PG County, Maryland. But yeah, we are considered an up and coming band.
VOTM: So how did you get introduced to the go-go scene?
FK: I was first introduced when I was in 10th grade by my good friend, Showtime from XIB, and he just schooled me on how the business is in go-go and what it takes to be a good band. So I started my own band when I was 15 called Mad Intensity Band, but that ain’t work out, so I went to BWA where I knew half of the people since 6th grade.
VOTM: What makes BWA so different from other bands in the game right now?
FK: The main thing that makes us different is that we are a very hard-working band that is dedicated and we also play all kinds of music that the people can dance to and groove to. We know how to play a mean socket/pocket at the age that we are now, and we just have an all-around band that is not just for playing go-go music, but we are musicians in general.
VOTM: I know people are gonna want to catch a show after reading this…where can the fans catch BWA playing?
FK: You can catch BWA at Studio 3 on Saturday, and Royal Rumble Battle at the CFE and X4B on Sunday. Check out our website for info on the band and shows at http://www.myspace.com/uxbband2
VOTM: What’s your inspiration to do this music?
FK: My main inspiration is older bands like Backyard, Rare Essence, Trouble Funk, Chuck Brown, UCB, etc. I respect all the go-go legends, because without them, I would not be in a band making music that the go-go fans want to hear. Also, my inspiration is God because he put me on this earth for a reason.
VOTM: How do you feel about the critics that say that the young bands are fucking up the groundwork that the older bands laid down?
FK: I mean, I don’t pay attention to the haters or the people that like to put down younger bands. The only thing I can say to speak for myself and my band is that we are not trying to mess up the groundwork that the older bands put down. We are trying to just do us and stay humble and continue to work hard on being a successful band.
VOTM: What’s next for BWA?
FK: The next step for BWA is a lot more shows with our names on flyers, thanks to Gator, which is our manager. Also, we will be having a Spring studio album that will be called “Wake Up Call”, and that should come out in April or early May. I’ll just say to keep y’all eyes open because BWA is on a move and we aren’t stopping for anyone.
VOTM: Favorite go-go band, other than BWA?
FK: My favorite go-go bands are BackYard, old CCB, old MOB, Reaction Band, TCB, UCB, Rare Essence, Trouble Funk, and last but not least, Chuck Brown. I fucks with every go-go band out there because they are putting in their time and hard work to make their music sound good so that the fans can appreciate what they offer to go-go.
VOTM: Favorite carry-out?
FK: Hands down, it’s China Chef in Mitchellville Plaza.
VOTM: Favorite clothing store?
FK: Last Stop, A.E., Urban Outfitters, etc.
VOTM: Favorite DMV rapper?
FK: Wale, and I’d like to hear some music from you, Lyriciss, real talk.
VOTM: Congo grooves or bounce beat?
FK: I love both congo grooves and bounce beat, but the bounce beat is hot right now to the younger crowd. But I grew up on the ongo groove since N.E.G. used to play that style with Smoke on the congos. So yeah, congo groove, hands down.
VOTM: Any last words for the people and/or shout outs?
FK: First, I would like to shout out my whole band: Von (lead mic), Ronnie (2nd mic/male singer), Mike (rapper), Leonard (3rd Mic), Nate (4th Mic), Lena (female singer), FattyKou (2nd Male singer), BJ (1st Keyboard), Rell (2nd Keyboard), Jaren (3rd keyboard), Ray Loc (Bass Guitar), Frank (drums), Dre (back-up Drums), Steve (Congos), Flash (’Bales), and Gator (manager). So yeah, thats my big family right there, I love my fams. Oh, I can’t forget my Moms, Miss Rozita, who is BWA’s other assistant manager. But yeah, everybody stay tuned to what BWA is up to next because in ‘08. We are going to be stamped as the best up and coming band of ‘08. God bless and I’ll catch y’all at our shows. And all my thanks go to Lyriciss, because he made this interview possible.
