VOTM Interviews: Problem Child

Voice Of The Metro: Introduce yourself to the world.

Problem Child: I am the one and only, often imitated but never duplicated, real Problem Child of that H/H and Unspoken click, ya dig?

VOTM: So for the people that don’t know who you are, give the people a little history on you.

PC: Well, I’ve been rapping since I was about 8. My cousin Delancy (of Spynehitaz) was the person that really gave me that push I needed to get serious about it. Whenever I used to tell him I wanted to rap, he’d make me write a song, so I just developed my skill as I got older. I’ve been performing all around the DMV area since I was about 14.

VOTM: Stamp that. So what do you have in the works right now?

PC: Right now, I’m just preparing my mixtape for an early May release. It’s going to have some bangers on there, and the features are going to be crazy. Other than that, just workin on my album and my modeling portfolio. My photographer, “L”, is the best. Shoutout to L’s Photos too, man, I gotta show love.

VOTM: What are the mixtape and the album going to be called?

PC: The mixtape is going to be called “The Rap Game’s Problem”, and the album is going to be called “One Of A Kind”.

VOTM: So as an MC, who influences you?

PC: Well, a lot of people influence me as an MC, from big cats in the game like Eminem, Jay-Z, Lil’ Wayne, and T.I., to DMV artists like my H/H fam and my Unspoken niggas. Oh, and I can’t forget them Spynehitaz! And my city itself inspires me, because that’s who I represent everytime I hit the booth or the stage.

VOTM: True, true. Break down the members of each squad, by the way, for the people that don’t know.

PC: Well, in the H/H click, you got my man L.G., that nigga Swaggar, my man Lyriciss, and my brother IenStyne. For the Unspoken family, we deep, but the MCs are Burns, IenStyne, Bones, Future, and X-Cluzive. Last but not least, Spynehitaz, we’re the One Way family, Mo C.H.I.P.S., Kingpin Slim, Bread, Delancy, and Luv. That’s about it. Oh, shout out to my Landover representers, like them 17-Bangas, ODR, The Cousin Crew, and Rebel. Doing it big for the NFL (Niggaz From Landover).

VOTM: So what is your whole goal with this rap game?

PC: My goal is to make a name for my city in an industry that’s scared of us, but takes a lot of things from us, and to just be heard. It’s a lot of rappers nowadays that aren’t really saying anything, and I just want people to know hip-hop ain’t dead, it lives in the DMV.

VOTM: On the mixtape, what features do you have?

PC:  Of course, I got my Unspoken and H/H families, but I also got Yak Barracus and Del Dada of ODR, my man EA from Low Key High Life, Cadi Mac, The Chop Shop Cartel, my man Lil Jay the Seat Pleasant Representer, K-E, my nigga Bobby Johnson, and a few others. I don’t wanna give all my secrets away, but one feature that I’m in the works of right now and i’m excited about is one with the entire Dirty Dozen from The Top Dogg Hill Click. Not to mention, I got the one and only DJ Kool to show some love on the mixtape, too.

VOTM: That’s what’s up. It’s also word that you’re AFFILIATED with the legendary DJ Kool. What’s that translating into?

PC: That’s just a blessing in itself. DJ Kool is my mentor, and he also is how I hooked up with my photographer. Now I’m taking notes and getting to learn the game from a legend, not to mention, it affilliates me with original DMV hip-hop.

VOTM: Good to hear. So now we get to the DMV section of questions. Favorite carryout?

PC: Mainland Resturaunt, in King Shopping Center around my way, out in Landover.

VOTM: Favorite go-go band?

PC: I’m a DMV boy, I can’t just have one favorite go-go band, but my top 7 are Rare Essence, UCB, Raw Image, Backyard, New Impressions, CCB. and that good old Mambo Sauce. Not in that exact order, either. (laughs)

VOTM: Favorite clothing store?

PC: Gotta love Last Stop. They got all the hot U.S. trends and the good local stuff, too. I like H&M, American Eagle, and Hollister, too.

VOTM: Favorite artists out of the area, name as many as you want to.

PC: Myself, of course, them H/H boyz, Unspoken, Mo C.H.I.P.S., ODR, Chop Shop Cartel, KayeM, the One Way Family, DJ Kool, and the 43ntourage.

VOTM: Any shoutouts and/or last words for the people?

PC: Man, just to my H/H and Unspoken fams, the whole DMV area, DJ Kool, L’s Photos, Spynehitaz, ODR, and a special shoutout to my hoods - Bawscow and Nalley Road, because I’m NRC forever! And a message to the industry - keep your mouth closed and your eyes and ears open, because the DMV is coming to take over, ya dig?
